Leadership Development Program Applications Still Being Accepted

Applications can still be submitted for the 2012 Leadership Development Program. This four-week program is designed to challenge and facilitate the development of personal skills and leadership abilities through a fun, hands-on experience amidst a supportive and encouraging community. Applicants for the Leadership Development Program should have completed grade 10 or 11 and be 16-17 years of age. Applicants should be responsible, enthusiastic, and prepared to be a role model to younger campers.

“Camps for Kids” Campaign a Success

Donations continue to come in for the Camps for Kids Capital Campaign. To date, the campaign has raised some $2.2 million for renewal projects at Camp Stephens and Camp Y. At Camp Stephens, construction has now been completed on four new camper cabins, with construction of five additional cabins now well under way.

On August 27th, Camp Stephens welcomed campaign donors, alumni, families, friends and staff to the Camps for Kids Campaign Cabin Dedications and Six Week Return Ceremony. Four new cabins were dedicated – Patersons, Manitou, St Julien’s and Dave’s. A big thank you to all our Camps for Kids Campaign donors!

Renewal work has also been completed at Camp Y, so that full summer operations began in earnest for children and youth groups. The outdoor swimming pool has been completely redeveloped with a new liner and a fabulous double chute slide, and also camper cabins and service facilities modernized. A special feature under development is the new Manitoba Hydro Wellness Centre.

Camp Stephens Completes 120th Summer Camping Season

Camp Stephens on Lake of the Woods completed it’s 120th successful season in 2011, hosting nearly 1100 youth from May to September with traditional resident camp programs, wilderness canoe tripping, school outdoor education groups, family camp and leadership training. More than 100 kids were able to attend camp from families who could not afford the full fees and this year a number of inner city schools sent groups to camp for wilderness adventures that most of the students had never before experienced.

Thanks to the generous donors, Kathy was able to take part in a 2 week residential camp program this summer. “I had a lot of fun. I loved all the activities, especially swimming and high ropes. My cabin mates were great and Kate is an awesome counsellor! I am wanting to become a camp counsellor and am taking swimming lessons to become a lifeguard. Again, thank you very much!” According to Kathy’s parents, her stay at Camp Stephens was the “highlight of her summer”.
