2012 Camp Y Teacher Package

Thank you for considering Camp Y to host your school’s outdoor experience. For 121 years, YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg Camps have been dedicated to working with young people – teaching them new skills, building identity and expanding their boundaries. We look forward to making your experience an enjoyable and memorable one here at our newest site.

We understand the impact of an outdoor camp experience and look forward to working with you to ensure a program that meets the needs and goals of your students and your group. Our range of programs offers many personal and group development opportunities for your students. In this safe and healthy environment, students can experience great outdoor adventures and improve interpersonal relationships while having fun as they learn.

This guide is designed to assist you in organizing a successful and enjoyable outdoor education experience. We understand you have undertaken a large task, and we have designed this booklet to make the planning easier and more enjoyable. You will find that the guide contains valuable information regarding your trip to Camp Y. Please feel free to duplicate any materials that you find helpful and distribute them to all involved. The yellow sections of this booklet are meant to be copied and distributed to parents and the blue sheets are forms that are to be completed and returned to us.

Camp Y Responsibilities

We plan to provide the following to your school:

  • Assist with any support required before your visit.
  • Assign a counselor to each cabin.
  • Assume supervision of students aside from the times listed below.
  • Instruct and supervise all camp activities aside from those listed below.
  • Secure, handle and dispense medication.
  • Provide alternative programming if regularly scheduled programming is unavailable due to weather or unforeseen circumstance.
  • Work with school staff to provide the best possible experience for all.

Teacher Responsibilities

Our expectation is that teachers help us out in the following areas:

  • To complete all paperwork and submit by appropriate dates.
  • To support our staff if there are any discipline problems.
  • To circulate and assist Camp Y staff and participants with the activities and programming.
  • After meals we allow our staff a break and time for our senior staff to disseminate any important information. We ask that teachers supervise the students during this time. Students are instructed they may use this time to visit the washroom, or sit on their cabin porch if they don’t want to be inside. It’s just like supervising recess and it provides a needed break for our staff.
  • We also request your assistance with night-time supervision. On the second night your school is at camp, between 10:30 and 11:30 p.m., once the group is settled – our staff is allowed to come to the dining hall for a night-time snack and socialization time. We ask that several teachers are in or near cabins to ensure there are no problems.
  • To respect the environment and the Y policies. We also request your ongoing feedback and support.
  • Alcohol and smoking are not permitted while students are at camp
